If Not for the Cat
Author(s): Jack Prelutsky
Jack Prelutsky presents 17 verses that double as riddles about different life forms' identities, each one in haiku form. "If not for the cat,/ And the scarcity of cheese,/ I could be content" is paired with a beautiful mixed media illustration of a mouse looking furtively out from its hole at an enormous cat's face. "Gaudily feathered,/ With nothing at all to say,/ I can't stop talking" appears with an almost fluorescently bright picture of a parrot. Even without the accompanying illustrations, it usually wouldn't be difficult to guess which creature is being noted.
