A dazzling and mesmerising story that charts the collision course between a rare landscape by a female Dutch painter of the golden age, an inheritor of the work in 1950s Manhattan, and a celebrated art historian who painted a forgery of it in her youth. A literary novel of breathtaking scope, ambition and achievement.

Dominic Smith has skilfully woven three time periods linked through the painting. In the present day Ellie is curating an exhibition in Sydney when she realises that both the original and forgery of a painting by Sara de Vos painted in the 17th Century are in transit to Sydney. In addition we spend a lot of time with Ellie in New York in 1957 when she painted the forgery. This is an armchair read and I loved being immersed in the detail and the journey. The third part of the story is set in Holland 1631 and follows Sara de Vos herself, revealing the story behind the painting. Cleverly written and totally absorbing.
