Miss Elise is late getting to the house of Mr. & Mrs. Litchfield – she has been invited to attend their daughter, Grace Litchfield’s recital on a beautiful spring afternoon. As she crosses the lawn at the back of the estate, she finds a ruby stone. She puts it in her purse. Before the recital, Raymond and Constance Litchfield have a slight argument. Constance is inebriated as usual. She stomps out of the house in the direction of the lake where Raymond finds her an hour later – she drowned. The precious necklace she was wearing is gone. Grace, unaware of what’s happening gives a perfect recital to a captive audience. At the end of her performance, Miss Elise tells her that her mother has met with an accident. Grace escorts the guests out of the house with a heavy heart. As she does, her Uncle Hubert comes to meet her. She doesn’t know him – it’s the first time she sets eyes on her mother’s brother. Miss Elise notices that he’s missing a ruby stone from his tie-pin. Leading his investigation regarding the disappearance of Constance’s necklace and her eventual drowning, Inspector Lindsey discovers that Uncle Hubert is an imposter at Raymond’s stipends. Will they ever find the necklace, or is it lost for ever?
