Foreword by the late Sir Arthur C. Clarke:
"For years, I used to say: ‘The first Space Elevator will be built 50 years after everyone has stopped laughing’. Well, the laughing stopped a few years ago, and the idea has advanced rapidly during the past decade. In 1995, it was entirely in the realm of science fiction. By 2000, it was becoming accepted as a theoretical possibility. Now, in 2006, it is an established engineering project, where the details are being planned for construction -- maybe by the 2020s. Dr. Brad Edwards, the co-author of this book, is one engineer who was drawn to this challenge. Having studied the problem in great depth and detail, Brad has made it his life’s mission to construct a Space Elevator. Indeed, the Arthur C Clarke Foundation recognized his efforts when he was presented the Arthur C. Clarke Innovator Award 2005.
The other co-author Phil Ragan, has identified Perth, Western Australia, as an ideal Space Elevator base. This idea was incorporated in the recent novel Sunstorm (2005) that Stephen Baxter wrote based on my ideas. I would like to thank Brad and Phil for their research and analysis that provided technical background.
While science fiction has been promoting the Space Elevator for a long time, most factual books and papers on the subject have been technical. To my knowledge, this is the first comprehensive book to explain the Space Elevator in simple English. By raising the public profile and interest in this extremely worthwhile endeavor, the book can also influence governments and industry to invest sufficient resources needed to make it a reality. I am hoping that the Hollywood movie adaptation of The Fountains of Paradise would also be completed in the near future, adding to this momentum."
